Assets, datasets and classifications

How assets, spatial datasets and the taxonomy relate to each other.

20 min

The pieces

  • Asset — one physical thing: a road segment, a pipe, a building, a play structure.
  • Asset dataset — a governed grouping of assets of the same class, e.g. Road Assets.
  • Spatial dataset — the mapped features, with their own coordinate reference system.
  • Taxonomy — the controlled language that ties them together.

The taxonomy

Every asset is classified as Group → Class → Type → Subtype. The group is derived from the class, so it can never drift.

| Level | Example | | --- | --- | | Group | Transport | | Class | Roads | | Type | Road Segment | | Subtype | Sealed carriageway |

The asset ID follows the same discipline: a 2-4 letter class prefix, an optional category, then digits — for example RD-00125 or ASS-RD-001.
