Take a stormwater pipe:

1. It is registered with a code, class, type and dimensions.
2. It is mapped as a line feature in the project's authoritative spatial reference.
3. It is inspected — condition recorded, defects raised.
4. It is maintained — work orders raised and completed against it.
5. It is valued — replacement value, expected life and written-down value derived from the data.
6. It is planned — remaining life and condition feed renewal forecasting.

The practical payoff

Every step writes to the same record. The asset's history, its spatial position and its financial position are always describing the same physical thing.
