The GIS workspace and spatial reference

The mapping workspace

Basemaps, asset features, filtering the map, and reading the layer of record.

35 min

The map is a view of the register

Every feature you see on the map is an asset record with geometry. Selecting a feature opens its record; selecting a record locates its feature.

Working with the workspace

  • Switch between street, satellite and hybrid basemaps — the basemap is context only, never the source of truth
  • Filter by asset class, status and mapped state without leaving the map
  • Show or hide asset classes to reduce visual noise on dense networks
  • Zoom to an extent and the features load for that extent, so the workspace stays responsive at scale

The layer of record

The platform renders assets from the asset master. There is no separate GIS layer that can drift out of step with the register: correcting the record corrects the map.
